Leda Atomica “s/t”

Artist: Leda Atomica
Title: s/t
Format: Digital
Label: Atypeek Music
Genre: Synth Punk
Release Date: 17/11/2023

This album dates back to 1986 and was only released on cassette. Leda Atomica is a cult French band, and it was based in Marseille, a sort of country within a country with its own codes and rules. Yaref Ben Hazim, who has worked on mastering or videos for Moodie Black, Barbara Panther, E.D.O., Oto, Chris Conde, Miles Bevier, Geins’t Naït, and more, was tasked with remastering this forgotten cult album. Leda Atomica was contemporaneous (in the 1980s) with other unique French groups such as Kas Product, Oto, Geins’t Naït, Trisomie 21, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, Taxi Girl. A particularly bold, dark, and intense scene.

Leda Atomica, the legendary punk rock band hailing from Marseille, was launched in the 90s by the creative minds of Phil Spectrum and Nick Zaroff. Their unrestrained energy and deadpan humor quickly propelled them onto French stages, securing opening slots for legends such as The Cramps, Iggy Pop, and Bashung, while leaving their mark at prestigious events like the Printemps de Bourges and Francofolies. Over the years, Leda Atomica evolved to become much more than just a music band. Transformed into a collective of musician-actors (LAM), Leda Atomica Musique embraced a multitude of arts and stage disciplines to offer shows of unparalleled diversity.

In addition to being an accomplished rock band, LAM also invested in a record label, a recording studio, and a series of innovative artistic creations. Their continuous collaboration with theater, street art, dance, pyrotechnics, cabaret, and visual arts makes them a major player in the contemporary artistic scene. Founded by the talented Phil Spectrum, Leda Atomica Musique is, in fact, the continuation of the famous Leda Atomica group, of which he was one of the co-founders. After touring concert venues throughout France and beyond, Leda Atomicamade the bold decision to transform into an artistic collective, giving birth to the LAM label in 1990.

To this day, Leda Atomica has become much more than just a punk rock band. It is a true artistic phenomenon, a kaleidoscope of talents and creative expressions that constantly pushes the boundaries of live performance. The French artistic scene, especially the Marseille scene, would definitely not be the same without the audacity and originality of Leda Atomica Musique.

Les Shtauss “No Feeling”

Artist: Les Shtauss
Title: No Feeling

Format: Digital
Labels: Atypeek Music

Genre: Garage Rock, Punk
Release Date: 17/11/2023

In the 1980s, an iconic group emerged at the heart of Nantes, in the Pays de la Loire region of France. Les Shtauss, a musical ensemble consisting of four to five members, rose to prominence and left an indelible mark on the music scene during a memorable span of seven years.

Originally known as Doktor Shtauss, the group later opted for the striking name Les Shtauss. Their musical style evolved into a captivating fusion, reminiscent of the mesmerizing tones of Lords of the New Church and The Stooges.

The stage was not merely a playground but a battleground for this band, where they delivered a fiercely energetic rock’n’roll spirit, just as potent on record as in their live performances. Their charismatic and electric presence resonated deeply with every spectator in the audience.

The pillars of the group, marked by Goret on vocals, Ludo and Fafa on guitars, Manu on bass, and the extraordinary drummer Jimmy B., made their mark with the release of the single No Feeling, leaving an indelible stamp on the French rock scene. Despite the limited information available today, their music and presence undeniably shaped the cultural landscape of the era.

The year 1987 proved pivotal for Les Shtauss, as their track “Bang Bang Boom” featured on the “Eyes On You” compilation by Closer/Teenage Records, earning them well-deserved international recognition. The group continued their stride by releasing an impressive 45 RPM record, “Everybody Rockin'” / “Black In Town,” bursting with raging decibels, reminiscent of the pure punk style pioneered by Ramones and The Stooges.

Their incredible energy found a fresh expression with the six-track album No Feeling (1989 – Closer Records), a cohesive work in line with their distinctive style. It’s worth noting that the group was guided by Stéphane Saunier (in production), a pivotal figure at Closer Records during the late 80s and a staunch advocate for rock on the airwaves of Canal+.

In 2023, the legacy of Shtauss gains a fresh breath with the comprehensive reissue of their discography under Atypeek Music, benefiting from a remastering by Yaref Ben Hazim (Moodie Black, Barbara Panther…). This reissue rekindles the flame of rock’n’roll, providing an unprecedented opportunity to dive into the raw and timeless energy of this group that managed to leave a mark on history.

Hence Confetti “s/t”

Artist: Hence Confetti
Title: s/t
Format: CD, Digital
Label: Bird’s Robe Records
Distribution: MGM
Genre: Alternative Metal
Release Date: 10/11/2023

Australian alternative metal project Hence Confetti have announced they will be joining the Bird’s Robe Records label roster for the release of their debut self-titled record in 2023.

Formed by former Mish frontman Rowland Hines, the project began as an outlet for Hines to express his post-Mish and post-fatherhood emotions, as he relocated from Sydney to his hometown of Bathurst, before settling in Warnervale, NSW.

Fans of the legendary underground metal records produced by Mish will recognise Hines’ impassioned vocal delivery, as well as the brooding undertones that often accompanied their music. But Hence Confetti paints a broader palette and uses different colours to communicate.

Singles Buttons and New Homes might be as heavy as it gets, but there’s a lot to explore in the dynamic sound of this new project.

Citing influences from classic bands like BotchThe Devin Townsend ProjectToday Is The DayPusciferLo!,MastodonCOG and Conjurer, the band wear their love for emotional heavy music proudly on their sleeve.

In this rare example of an isolation that spawned connection, experimental tentacles sent out by lead writer Hines allowed his farm rooted drummer and uprooted guitarist to pulse back their own tidal waves of loss and creation in parallel to his. From apogee to apex, burnt homes to new daughters, Hence Confetti’s brand of amity as therapy has produced a haunting and evocative sound.

Ni “Fol Naïs”

Artist: Ni
Title: Fol Naïs
Format: 2xLP, CD, Digital

Label: Dur & Doux
Distribution: Broken Silence

Genre: Experimental Noise Metal
Release Date: 01/12/2023

For anyone already familiar with Ni, the title of their third album is bound to raise a smile. Fol Naïs, literally “born mad” in Old French, is the name given to the fools and jesters of history’s great rulers. This symbol of impertinence couldn’t be more appropriate for this new release from the most unclassifiable of Rhône-Alpes quartets. Renowned for their “silly and bouncy” (sic) sound, Ni tried their hand at darker, heavier music on Pantophobie (2019), reflecting the period the band was going through. The bells of Fol Naïs sound the hour for a return to faster tempos, but not without affirming an instrumental renewal:

“This is the great dilemma for any band: how to successfully carry a legacy from the past while renewing itself? With Fol Naïs, we consider it a success in this sense, as it’s an album that doesn’t feel like a rehash of Pantophobie. Pantophobie had run its course, and it was time to react. Re-accelerating the tempo could be the breaking point. We wanted to open even more doors. We wanted to tap into the energy of metal, without having the color of it since we also dipped into old formulas that unify our sound.”

Math Rock? Noise? Metal? Jazz? On these 10 new tracks, Ni delights more than ever in blurring the lines and confusing their audience, remaining true to their desire to go further in experimentation. A call to modernity, guitarists Anthony Béard and François Mignot exploit new pedals, driven by a desire for synthesizer-like sounds, deepening their alchemy with the anarchic rhythm section of Benoit Lecomte (bass) and Nicolas Bernollin (drums).

From “Zerkon”, as chaotic as it is jovial, we know that the ears we’re addressing are preferably the most seasoned. The tension is palpable on the following tracks, which are hybrids of Don Caballero and Meshuggah (“Chicot”, “Dagonet”), when they aren’t sprinkled with the breakcore of Igorrr (“Brusquet”) or the all-out rage of Botch (“Rigoletto”). Fortunately, Ni easily manages to incorporate relative breaths (“Berdic”, the triptych “Triboulet”), culminating in the slow, ambient “Cathelot”, with its hurdy-gurdy conveying a certain elevation. Pirouettes and nose-thumbing at musical convention follow one another. Which only adds to the meaning of each track on this new album, all named after real-life jesters:

Historically, the jester’s spectacles were the moments when the masks fell off. The rulers and their courts accepted all frontal and openly declamatory criticism, mixed with art, mime, something that was lived. As artists and musicians, this is how we fit in. Our own buffoonery leads us to go against the grain of what’s expected of us. You want Ni to be a jazzy noise band? Well, we’ve failed!”

It’s all there, Ni is always complex, dissonant and shaggy. But their formidable inventiveness and unexpected danceability make them a leading light in the French musical niche. With Fol NaïsNi takes another step in their quest for the Holy Grail, displaying as much mischief as wrath. Demonstration on December 1, 2023!
