PORNOHELMUT "Bang Lord":

Texas-Based Extreme/Experimental Act PORNOHELMUT has completed its mind-numbing new album, Bang Lord. The madman has signed with French avant purveyors Atypeek Music for the album’s primary release in February.

PORNOHELMUT is the work of one Neil Barrett, formerly of BLK OPS, The Dead See, and others. With this outfit, Barrett fires point-blank on all cylinders blasting a debilitating alloy of explosive drums/percussion, synths, vocals, and more at the listener. Live, the performance is doused in hyperbizarre visuals. Bang Lord marks PORNOHELMUT’s first studio album release, a multifaceted crystallization of industrial noise, punk rock, metal, experimental electronics, and violently enigmatic percussion that tests the boundaries and proclivities of underground music at large. The album was engineered by Neil Barrett at Hell’s Kitchen, mastered by James Plotkin, and features artwork by Josh Paul.

In addition to the impending Bang Lord album, PORNOHELMUT is creating a fully audiovisual album with Gridfailure as well as other projects to see release in the new year.

PORNOHELMUT first surfaced in the Texas underground scene in the winter of 2001. Early shows featured analog synth percussion, scrambled vocals, an effect-mangled guitar being beaten relentlessly, and crudely dubbed VHS mixtape-style visuals displayed on CRT televisions. During this time, the one-man act shared the stage with such wildly varied and esteemed groups as Mastodon, Genghis Tron, Jucifer, and Melt Banana.

PORNOHELMUT soon became notorious for irreverent and often jarring shows. The strong reactions of attendees only served to further fuel the intensity and fervor of the performances. The live show was once described by John Dwyer of Thee Oh Sees as, «the most complex solo project since Captured! By Robots,» and when asked about the act, Brent Hinds of Mastodon remarked, «What’s he gonna do next, just start killing people? Seriously, I’m worried about that guy.»

After relocating to Austin, PORNOHELMUT quickly blossomed into an all-out mind-bending audiovisual experience, incorporating synchronized animated visual projections and drum-controlled synths and samples, and was featured on showcases at SXSW among other festivals and events. The unique spectacle caught the eye of some internationally traveling artists, and soon several European tours came about, sharing billing with such acts as Mr. Marcaille, Chantal Morte, Tat2noisact, and Schlaasss. Subsequent tours both in the US and abroad have seen wide success, with performances at private parties at Burning Man and guest appearances on French radio bringing highlights.

PULCINELLA "CA"

Formed in 2004 by four major actors of the Toulouse, France scene Pulcinella plays an omnivore kind of jazz, fond of rock, tango, musette, and eastern Europe music, all in order to serve musical stories and sparkling colors pictures.

For 15 years, this playful quartet has not grown tired of doing everything it wants. With drums, a double bass, an accordion and a saxophone, Pulcinella mixes funk, jazz, Balkan music, electro, musette and progressive rock to create a polymorphic and borderless music. With more than 600 concerts on the clock, the quartet gets real on stage, it has performed in prestigious festivals such as Jazz in Marciac, the Festival Radio France, Rio Loco, Jazz sous les Pommiers, the London Jazz Festival, the Odessa Festival. The band travelled the roads of some twenty countries such as Honduras, Guatemala, Bulgaria, Tajikistan, Moldova, Colombia, India and even Vietnam to celebrate the 1000 years of the capital Hanoi!

Greedy of encounters, the Pulcinella always like to collaborate with other artists. In addition to new creations with different musicians (Émile Parisien, Leïla Martial, Andreas Schaerer, Hervé Suhubiette... ), they like to rub shoulders with other artistic fields: Pulcinella composed the music of theatre plays and film concerts, collaborated with dancers, illustrated text readings, accompanied circus acts... Pulcinella created in 2017 Le Grand Déballage (futuristic dancing ball where mazurka, afrobeat, waltz and merengue clash one on the other) and started a new musical adventure with Italian singer Maria Mazzotta in June 2019.

The new and 6th Pulcinella album titled ÇA ("it" in English) is out now on legendary Hungarian BMC Records (Budapest Music Center). More electric than the previous ones, ÇA hosts a gallery of mutant sounds straight out of an Elka organ and pedals of strange effects... an atypical music serving an ode to the ÇA, a stream of desires without censorship studied by Doctor Freud.

YUNE "Agog

Agog is the debut album from Danish indie quintet Yune made with producer Nis Bysted (Thulebasen, Iceage). True to the desert theme permeating the album, Agog describes seemingly hopeless situations and trying to get out of them without knowing if the glimmer of hope on the horizon is an oasis or a mirage.

"The desert imagery is open to interpretation; to different frames
of mind. For some, it might the heat and the meditative, buoyant feeling of endlessness. For others, it might be loneliness and emptiness that dominates the listening experience," says Yune. "We love this dualistic feeling. It hints at things perhaps not being as they seem; that there’s more to them.
"

On Agog, Erlend Eggestad and Nikolaj Bugge’s guitars whirl around and through each other like a dust devil across the desert floor, combining Tuareg sleight with a blockier/linear Western sensibility. Synthesizers shimmer like heat in the air, while bassist Mads Flethøj Ege and drummer Tobias Andreassen create a rolling, heavy backbone – a motion that feels as if navigating treacherous ground. Finally, singer Tobias Sachsen moves from shoegazy legato and staccato phrases delivered with an almost casual urgency, as on the earworm chorus of leadsingle Odd One Out, or the mysterious Unna, which culminates in a hazy string climax that feels as if gravity has shifted by 90 degrees, the landscape soaring by you in horizontal freefall.

The album is characterised by a self-assured recklessness. With just four tracks written, the band booked four days in the studio with DIY-veteran Nis Bysted, convinced that it would result in an entire album. And it did. The five members of Yune have wildly different personal and musical differences (one is a doctor, another a plumber, another a blind psychic, the fourth a communist and the fifth an actual dog), but they trust in each other’s musical intuition; they’re comfortable with letting their ideas be molded by one another.

The journey to Morocco, where the videos for singles Odd One Out and Low were filmed, as well as the photos and the album cover, was likewise spontaneous and relatively unplanned. The band knew where they were going and that they wanted to make a couple of music videos, but they had never met the director, Niklas Adrian, before they met in the airport. And aside from the location, the videos were completely unplanned. As on the album, everything was left to the band’s mutual intuition. A common guiding star called Yune.

CHROMB! "Le Livre Des Merveilles"

CHROMB! makes its own music, preferring continuous renewal to stabilizing labelling; the quartet's fuel is a mixture of inventiveness and generosity, which has been spreading over the last ten years on a variety of stages, from international festivals to places of underground culture. CHROMB! is a member of Dur et Doux, a collective/label dedicated to unclassifiable music based in Lyon.

CHROMB!'s discography shows its openness: while album I (2012) laid the supersonic foundations of the band through open and collective writing, its successor II (2014) digested the dense and electric energy of intensive touring. Next comes 1000 (2016), a dense and labyrinthine album where hyper-writing and vocal polyphonies are integrated into the band's favourite ingredients. Finally, Le Livre Des Merveilles (2020), echoes the travel stories of Gervais de Tilbury (1150-1218): there are songs that tell, and instrumental pieces that evoke, with a slowness and sound places that the band had never visited before. Alongside the concerts and records, the band will also be rubbing shoulders with the live drawing concert in the company of Benjamin Flao from 2015 to 2018.

In 2019, CHROMB! launched into the writing of a new repertoire populated by synthetic insects and traversed by an insane energy: the writing leaves as much room for irresistible riffs for the body as it does for the slow development of sound masses that speak to the skull, stealing the energies of the freest music, whether experimental or danceable.

At the time of civilisation collapse, only the bold pave the way. Back to basics. Let us give CHROMB! a certain sense of responsibility : through this fourth album, entitled Le Livre Des Merveilles, the quartet appears in a new light. Washed of their sins.

Off with the worn out fusion-prog, the ten notes per second that were the trademark of the Lyon-based musicians, now the approach is radical and the demonstrative varnish fades away in favour of "knowledge". This same «knowledge» the XIIIth century cleric and knight Gervais de Tilbury praised in his Livre Des Merveilles which the band draws his inspiration from, even borrowing entire dizzying fragments.

This is how CHROMB!'s heroic gest unfolds! The four tracks, inspired by a fantasized mythology that J.L Borges would not have disavowed, let eventually the light come through... Between medievalism and futurism, the lyrics in French, make use of playful hermeticism and smash the rules to pieces. Less acidic, more structured, the style asserts itself, more and more epic as it is ornament-less. Labyrinthine tales with sinuous vocal parts here, a noisy symphony there: with Le Livre Des Merveilles, the incredible gives way to the fabulous... Then, in the distance, the truth bursts out.

MEANWHILE PROJECT LTD. "Marseille":

"Somehow this sounds like the soundtrack to a movie I really have to see." ...

... is a sentence that Marcell Birreck and Marcus Adam have heard several times in this or a similar way. The duo from Cologne has been making music together for more than 20 years and played together in alternative rock band Lunatic Skydance, which was active from the late 90s to mid 2000 and had a broad fan base. Marcell is also a member of the Cologne electropop duo Schmackes & Pinscher.

With Meanwhile Project Ltd., the duo combines their most personal musical preferences, how different they may be. Epic post-rock-crackers and folky singer-songwriter ballads meet dust-dry Americana songs and experimentally playful Indie-Rock. Influences from bands as diverse as dEUS, Motorpsycho, the Villagers or Calexico flash up here and there.

Initially conceived as a short-lived solo project, Meanwhile Project Ltd. developed steadily from 2008 onwards. After some self-released releases, the digital release of The Judas Hole trilogy followed in 2012/2013, which included the first album The Judas Hole as well as two related EPs and was distributed by Dutch netlabel WM Recordings and the Cologne-based label Songpark. In the internet the release was a viral success, and attracted a lot of positive attention.

In April 2020, after a somewhat longer break, the second album Marseille will be released, this time also in physical form as a vinyl LP on the Bielefeld label Kapitan Platte. With the musical support of many guest musicians (among others the Cologne Subway Jazz Orchestra) and the renewed collaboration with the Austrian producer Hannes Jaeckl (Ampersand, Sans Secour, Komplizen der Spielregeln), a grandiose and multi-layered album has been created, which is definitely suitable for the next head cinema show.

After Meanwhile Project Ltd. have performed live so far mainly as a singer-songwriter duo, there will be a release tour in the course of the Marseille album release in May 2020 in a full band line-up.

PYRIOR "Fusion":

Pyrior started during the year 2008 as a musician’s community dedicated to jam-sessions. These jam- sessions resulted in the formation of a classic rock trio based in Berlin.

After the EP Pulsar (2009) and the debut album Oceanus Procellarum (2010) the band released two albums Onestone (2014) and Portal (2016).

With Portal the band completed its own epic trilogy. The sound moved from space rock to post rock, from heavy to psychedellic, from major to minor, and everything in between...

The new album Fusion (2020) stands for an exciting instrumental trip through different soundscapes in which the listener can get lost. The German trio is on a quest to cross their musical boundaries. Fusion pulls you into another world, a place that feels both new yet familiar.

On the fourth studio album Fusion the main theme is indeed fusion. The album is intended to make the musical influence of every band member audible, and to fuse different song structures and different sounds into a coherent whole. Therefore the music of Pyrior is an overall experience and a collective statement.

SEIMS "3+3.1":

Australia's premier math rock act SEIMS continues on their triumphant concept albums 3+3.1 out on Bird's Robe Records in April!

The opening track Cyan is a brutal return to form from the Sydney outfit - opening with stabbing punk guitar chords over an orchestral overload of brass and strings, before a dump truck load of bass is dropped into the mix, and their signature brand of controlled chaos throttles you for the next 5 mins.

It's a brilliant next step in the evolution of a band that began as the brainchild of Sydney multi- instrumentalist Simeon Bartholomew, and has turned into one of the country's most explorational and formidable outfits. 3.1 is a continuation of the concept album of 3 in the way that the third album explored the CMYK relationship, summing Cyan, Magenta and Yellow (and its murky results), where 3.1 focuses on luminance and the relationship of light within the colour spectrum. Imperfect Black closes the 3 part - and Absolute Black picks up right where it left off with it’s immediate drop and wall of sound, shifting through various modes, until the subtle key and tempo changes in the outro - starting the luminance journey.

Front man and multi-instrumentalist Simeon Bartholomew spoke about the thought process behind the new release: "Translucence is all about the passage between" he said. "[It begins] lost and struggling to find its way out of the Absolute Black, until we find our feet towards the big middle section of that song - then leading into pure Clarity - the 7/4 banger that’s all about seeing this one motif through right to end - almost heading 'towards the light' with that giant mess it finishes on.”

To compliment Translucence, the track is accompanied gorgeous music video. The band paired up with contemporary dancer Angela Hamilton, known for her award-winning dance company Opus, to choreograph and dance to the music following the translucence journey from the song Absolute Black, to the final track, Clarity.

The new musical instalment 3+3.1 from SEIMS was recorded and mixed by Tim Carr (Matt Corby, We Lost The Sea) at One Flight Up Studios and at Harry's Sunbeam and mastered by Jeff Lipton and Maria Rice at Peerless Mastering (Battles, Lightning Bolt, City & Colour).

Initially conceived as a one-man, studio project when Bartholomew released its debut, self-titled album in 2012, the band expanded into a ferocious live act for the follow up record, II in 2015. Today, SEIMS stands as a full force onslaught with some of Sydney’s most talented musicians.

Having forged a reputation as a live powerhouse, SEIMS has graced the stage with the likes of Tortoise, Regurgitator, We Lost the Sea, Jean Jean, Thomas Pridgen (The Mars Volta) and completed two tours of Japan, partaking on Tokyo’s iconic math-rock dedicated festival Bahamasfest, and in Australia with Progfest 2018 and Progfest 2019.

THE GLAD HUSBANDS "Safe Places":

Formed in the remote province of Cuneo, Italy at the beginning of 2011, The Glad Husbands took their first steps blending the musical remains of The Congruence of Motion – a noise band in which both the Albertos (vocals/guitar and bass/guitar respectively) played in their teens and early twenties
– with a new rhythmical lymph kindly provided by Slaiver and Dogs For Breakfast’s drummer and post- hardcore veteran Andrea.

As the result of intensive rehearsals the trio recorded a handful of new songs put to tape during the three hottest days of August 2011 under the title of God Bless The Stormy Weather, a sincere homage to hypocrisy, maladjustment, bad weather, discomfort, hidden aspects of social intercourses and other positive features of everyday life.

Since they don’t know how to define properly the music they play, they’re easily getting used to hide behind this short and effective motto: Rational music played with punk attitude.

THE LEGENDARY FLOWER PUNK "Wabi Wu"

Started in 2012 as an obscure side project of Kamille Sharapodinov (guitarist of established Russian heavy psych proggers The Grand Astoria), The Legendary Flower Punk quickly became a beast of its own. The band mixes psychedelia, space rock, funky fusion and electronics in a joyful manner like no one else in the scene. Krautrock, Japanoise, and Jazz are also no stranger words in the vocabulary of the band.

The Legendary Flower Punk knows no boundaries. The unique sound of the Russian trio combines pure Psychedelic Rock with classic Prog Rock elements. Wabi Wu is a brilliant mix, always varied and exciting.

A shadow simultaneously is and is not, a presence and an absence staking claim on the world. Fotocrime not only survives, but thrives in the shadows—beneath a heaviness that cannot be escaped, within melodies that defy light and dark. With South Of Heaven, the second full-length chapter in the project’s narrative, Fotocrime has found comfort on the fringe.

"It’s been a journey of persistence and obsession, more character actor than leading man," R., the singer, songwriter, musician, and producer behind Fotocrime, says. "South Of Heaven is deeply personal, an honest fiction, an exposed nerve pulsing in a blanket of fog."

South Of Heaven is the backlit highway slithering from 2018’s Principle of Pain, which bowed at the altar of post-street punks Blitz while nodding at the megawatt gleam of Depeche Mode and churn of Red Lorry Yellow Lorry. The stories comprising South Of Heaven are winding and boundless, unfolding with unexpected paths and hairpin turns. Touching the myths of Saturn and Phaethon and mining the lives of Bruno Ganz and Francis Bacon, the album carves a landscape that spans both earthly and astral planes.

"This is a record for late night drives, a soundtrack for headlights illuminating the horizon," R. says. "I’ll make music until the end of my days, with or without a listener, but I’m happy to have a passenger for the ride into the dark."

The drive begins with Invisible, a probe into destructive compulsions and the unwanted attention that is yoked with recovery. A taut beat commandeered by Hayden Menzies of Metz marches in tandem with slack-jawed and syncopated guitar, laying a bedrock for R.’s staccato ruminations. Hitting like a hammer to the temple at one moment and soothing like a hand on the shoulder the next, Invisible keenly examines two sides of a coin that we’ve all wagered.

South Of Heaven continues with a swim in the open wounds and spilt blood of heartbreak (Love Is A Devil), a harp-tinged appeal for care and company (Hold Me In The Night), and a postmortem of derailed destinies (Expulsion From Paradise). But South Of Heaven all but lacks grit: crackling guitars and stutter stepping synth make Foto On Wire a bona-fide grunge-wave burner, while album closer Tough Skin is a wind-whipped and wiling inquiry of masculinity’s many facades. No matter the subject matter, R. sings with a conviction that is dire, leaving no doubt that exorcising these demons is not just artistic martyrdom—it is a biological imperative.

While Fotocrime is a distillation and dilation of R.’s own life, he doesn’t wander the road entirely alone. Pervading South Of Heaven's ten tracks is the spirit of producer and primary engineer J. Robbins (Jawbox), who brings both detail and gusto to the album mix, from sessions recorded by Steve Albini (Shellac) at Electrical Audio in Chicago, Simon Small in London, and Robbins in Baltimore. Blue Smoke is buoyed by the crystalline vocals of Janet Morgan (Channels), while an arsenal of guests including Nick Thieneman (Young Widows), Erik Denno (Kerosene 454), and Rob Moran (Unbroken) bring the instrumental artillery.
