SLEEPMAKESWAVES "Live At The Metro":

To be in a moment like this with all of you beautiful people, is something beyond what we would have ever imagined. Thank you so much for giving us this opportunity. – Alex Wilson, sleepmakeswaves

If ever you needed reminding just how good and life-affirming live music can be – this one’s for you. Australian instrumental post-rockers sleepmakeswaves have announced the release of Live At The Metro – a momentous recording of their epic show at Sydney’s Metro Theatre in June 2015.

Originally recorded for triple j radio’s Live At The Wireless broadcast, the album features highlights from the band’s final show of their 55-date world tour in support of ARIA-nominated and J-Award nominated second album Love of Cartography.

The set list features album singles including Great Northern and Something Like Avalanches as well as a classic show-closing performance of A Gaze Blank And Pitiless As The Sun from their debut album ...And So We Destroyed Everything.

Headlining the Metro Theatre in their hometown was a high watermark for the band, whose classic Love of Cartography-era lineup features on this recording (Alex Wilson, Otto Wicks-Green, Tim Adderley & Jonathan ‘Kid’ Khor).

The emotions and excitement of the occasion are reflected clearly on the album – as the band take turns delivering heartfelt thanks and reflections on their journey, they are met with the cheers and tongue-in- cheek jeers of a rapturously supportive (and quintessentially Aussie) crowd.

Live At The Metro will be released on Friday 12 November on CD & 2LP through Bird’s Robe Records

Format: 2xLP, CD, Digital

MALO MORAY "Improvisations From The Solar System":

Malo Moray strives for understanding human existence through means of immersive experimental improvisations in unconventional musical settings inspired by the cosmos, science-fiction and obsolete sounds.

His latest album Improvisations From The Solar System (And Other Solo Pieces) is „the dark soundtrack to a dystopian Stanley Kubrick movie about the solitude of an astronaut drifting desperately lonely through space“ as press reports. Martin Riebel aka Malo Moray is the protagonist of this challenging ominous soundtrack, reflecting the vastness and isolation of space back onto his own depressive experiences during the COVID-crisis.

Malo‘s solo project is an ongoing experiment combining experimental music, ambient, kraut, neo- classical and jazz into a unique outburst of musical energies: Modified tape players, a prepared guitar and multiple self built synths orbit his virtuos electronically processed upright bass playing; emitting vast sound scapes reminiscing 80s sci-fi sound design emerging from the avant-garde works of Lou Reed, Brian Eno or John Zorn.

Intersed with a subtle sarcasm, the new album orbits human existence itself - the indifference and meaning of humankind in the eye of the frightening power and tremendous beauty of nature‘s creation.

Improvisations From The Solar System (And Other Solo Pieces) will be out November 26th, 2021 on all streaming platforms, on CD and on tape as a Bandcamp Exclusive limited HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE edition tape.

TOEHIDER "To Hide Her":

Melbourne’s Toehider have announced that their debut To Hide Her will be released on vinyl for the first time ever, in celebration of its 10th anniversary this year.

Originally released in September 2011, the record followed a mammoth 12 Eps in 12 months from the collaborative project between singer/multi-instrumentalist Mike Mills & graphic designer Andrew Saltmarsh.

Featuring the fan favourite lead single The Most Popular Girl In School the record blends 80s pop, metal and prog with Mike Mills’ trademark guitar heroics and incredible vocal range. Other standout tracks such as Daddy Issues, To Hide Her and There’s a Ghost in the Lake expolore a variety of diverse themes including fatherhood, fantasy and relationships. Fittingly, the title track To Hide Her is an epic hard rock banger with a phat groove. Of course no commentary on the album would be complete without reference to the punk-ode Everybody Knows Amy – a tribute to Toehider's original live bassist Amy Campbell, beloved by Toehider fans and band alike during her time with the band before moving abroad.

Mike Mills reflects on the release: "To Hide Her, from memory, was an album we did about 6 months after finishing the ‘12 EPS in 12 months’ string of releases. The first side of the album were sonds I’d already been working on, but the second side was approached as another challenge – ‘could I finish 1 song per day?’ Turns out I couldn’t and I think I did 4 songs in about a week instead.
Visually this is still one of my favourite things Salty has ever done and to not do a vinyl release of this with large scale artwork is an injustice!
"

The release of the album saw the band kickstart a more active touring schedule, playing shows alongside fellow Australians UNITOPIA, SLEEPMAKESWAVES & TWELVE FOOT NINJA, before eventually going on to tour nationally and internationally with acts such as DEVIN TOWNSEND, THE PROTOMEN, THE BEARDS & CALIGULA’S HORSE.

Toehider have now released 4 full length studio albums and 20 releases overall, as well as running a successful Patreon campaign since 2018, producing monthly content for fans. Since the pandemic halted live music and travel, Toehider have been livestreaming multiple times per week for fans around the world to tune in and enjoy the wealth of material from their catalogue.

SCHAEFER "Mosaik 127":

Schäfer is the solo project of the Cologne-based musician Lukas Schäfer. Coming from playing Drums, he increasingly dealt with electronic sound generators and modular synthesis. With Mosaik 127, Schäfer presents an album with ambient music that convinces with sensual dynamics, contrasting depth and artistic independence. Chains of associations and mind games form the conceptual foundation. It is a mosaic – every single part is significant and has its origin in the architecture of the Church of Johannes XXIII situated in the Berrenrather Straße 127 in Cologne, Germany. It was here that the musician realised that ambient music would become an important part of his artistic work.

The album begins with Valentine, a four-tone steamroller that seems to come out of nowhere. Then the introverted Bolzano contrasts, followed by Still with its character-strong arpeggio and a fulminant kick drum. Bielefeld was created in collaboration with the writer Juliana Kálnay, and in the following Somerset Schäfer recalls his childhood holidays in the southwest of England and creates a shimmering soundtrack for flowing days. The finale is 1 for N.F., a piece inspired by the Berlin musician Nils Frahm.

Mosaik 127 is a concept album whose mosaic pieces fit together like the colorful glass elements of the windows in the Church of Johannes XXIII. This is also evident in the album’s artwork, which constitutes a strong visual layer in the overall design of Mosaik 127. The digipack with its recycled tray and 12-page leporello booklet creates a generous haptic added value that literally plays into the hands of fans of analogue music and artwork.

MENISCUS "Refractions":

Meniscus have announced they will celebrate the 5th anniversary of second album Refractions on October 21 with a new vinyl pressing
As part of the Bird’s Robe Records 10th anniversary series, Refractions will feature a new vinyl pressing in partnership with European label dunk!records.
Refractions is the band’s first new material since their single DBT in 2014 and features an epic groove-laden soundscape crafted brilliantly by the Sydney act over 5 years of writing and jamming.

The cinematic ambient rock group, who feature extensive visual projections at their shows, used the momentum from the album to tour Europe alongside fellow Australians We Lost The Sea and Dumbsaint in 2017, before returning home to work on new material. Their performances at Dunk Festival in Zottegem, Belgium and at A38 in Budapest, Hungary were particularly acclaimed as some of their finest moments.

Meniscus debuted on the world stage with their EP release Absence of I back in 2007, before the release of their War of Currents debut album in 2011 saw the band going on to enjoy a formidable yet sporadic touring cycle. They shared stages with US post-rock giants Caspian and This Will Destroy You, as well as Australian alternative rock heavyweights Twelve Foot Ninja, The Red Paintings and Dead Letter Circus. They have also headlined their own tours of Europe and Australia, including performances at Dunk Festival (Belgium), Young Team (France), Fusion Festival (Germany), Peats Ridge Festival (NSW) and Jungle Love (QLD).

SOLKYRI "No House":

Australian post-rock quartet Solkyri have announced they will celebrate the 10th anniversary of their debut EP No House with an international release on vinyl & CD. As part of the Bird’s Robe Records 10th anniversary series, the record will be released in cooperation with Belgium’s famous Dunk Records and pressed on 180g vinyl for the first time.

Originally released in 2011, the record helped the band earn recognition as part of a burgeoning post-rock and post-metal scene in Sydney, alongside notable acts such as sleepmakeswaves, Meniscus, Dumbsaint, Panzer Queen, Mish, We Lost The Sea & Lander Configurations. Their early live performances led to a partnership with Bird’s Robe and extensive touring in their home country with sleepmakeswaves.

Following the release of full-length studio albums Are You My Brother? (2013) and Sad Boys Club (2015) the band increased their touring considerably. They toured alongside Maybeshewill (UK), …And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead (USA) and Mew (DEN) as well as heading to Europe for their first international performances at Belgium’s Dunk Festival in 2015, touring alongside fellow Australians Tangled Thoughts of Leaving. They also headlined their own shows at clubs along the east coast and shared stages with The Red Paintings, 65daysofstatic (UK) and Vampillia (JPN).

In 2020, they returned with their third record Mount Pleasant, further enriching their catalogue as a pummelling, dynamic instrumental rock act and debuting at #1 on the 100% Independent Charts in Australia and #96 on the ARIA Chart. They joined MONO (JPN) as part of their 20th anniversary tour before being sidelined by the onset of the pandemic until returning for a sold out hometown show to finally officially launch their album earlier this year.

The young post-rock group have continued a long recording and production relationship with former Canberra resident, now London-based producer Dax Liniere (Meniscus, Dumbsaint, sleepmakeswaves) across all their records.

No House has now been remastered by Liniere for vinyl and is a wonderful glimpse back at the exciting emergence of one of Australia’s most beloved post-rock acts of the past decade.

NO GOD ONLY TEETH "Placenta":

No God Only Teeth are a post-metal/sludge quintet from Hamburg, Germany and Placenta is their full-length debut album on Vinyl and CD, released via Narshardaa Records.

With their roots in different types of extreme and emotional music, they combine all their sounds to compose their distinctive voice. Between heavy guitar riffs, some gentle sounds accompany their quick-tempered melodies. Reflection of loss in uneasy and unsettling songs.

What would you expect from a band that consists of people who actually all come different corners, from the same punk or metal scene? A cooperation, or working against each other, or perhaps in the best case a few conflicts of interest that lead to exciting results. Here you have the luck to get the latter.

The path that the band has already hinted at with the first demo only gets stronger with the new album. Quite angry and desperate sound the female vocals, reminiscent of the good old Japanese emo scene. The German-language lyrics emphasize this very well. Around the vocals revolve the two guitars, bass and drums in a pseudo-ritual like dance. Sometimes fast, almost crossing over into the dirty more modern crust. But then suddenly, following the best post-rock motifs, it unfolds into something heartbreakingly beautiful and dramatic. And yet the mix remains balanced in the sludgy middle, reminiscent of the Neurosis Times of Grace album in terms of variety and atmosphere. Placenta is a moving album that you listen to again and again.

MAYBESHEWILL "No Feeling Is Final":

Since 2006 Maybeshewill have released four full-length albums of towering, cinematic instrumental music. After a decade long career that saw them tour across four continents they bowed out in 2016 with a sold out show at London’s Koko. Having reformed briefly in 2018 at the request of The Cure’s Robert Smith for a show at Meltdown Festival, 2021 sees the band return with their first new material since 2014’s Fair Youth. Having worked on ideas separately in the intervening years, it was the sketches of music that would become No Feeling Is Final that pulled the band back together. Building on the songs that they felt needed to be heard, together.

No Feeling Is Final was born from a place of weary exasperation. From the knowledge that we’re living in a world hurtling towards self-destruction. We watch as forests burn and seas rise. As the worst tendencies of humanity are championed by those in power; rage, fear, greed and apathy. We see every injustice, every conflict, every catastrophe flash up on our screens. We stay complacent and consume to forget our complicity in the structures and systems that sustain that behaviour. As the world teeters on the edge of disaster, we sigh and keep scrolling, the uneasy feeling in our stomachs eating away at us a little more each day.

However easy it would be to switch off and pretend all is lost, there’s no choice but to remain engaged. To set that feeling of hopelessness aside and use the fear and frustration as fuel to make something positive.

No Feeling Is Final is a message of hope and solidarity. It’s a story of growing grassroots movements across the world that are rejecting the doomed futures being sold to us, and imagining new realities based on equality and sustainability. It’s a reckoning with the demons in our histories and a promise to right the wrongs of the past. It’s a plea to take action in shaping the world we leave for future generations. It’s a simple gesture of reassurance to anyone else struggling in these troubled times: “Just keep going. No feeling is final.

Continuing and building on the self-sufficient, do-it-yourself ethos that has been core to their existence, No Feeling Is Final was once again recorded and produced by bassist Jamie Ward, and released on the bands own Robot Needs Home Collective Label, in collaboration with close friends Wax Bodega (North America), New Noise (Asia) and Birds Robe (Australasia).

clayhands "Is This Yes?":

Sydney’s clayhands have joined Sydney-based label Bird’s Robe Records. Their self produced debut album Is This Yes? will be released on November 5 initially on CD & digital formats, followed by a vinyl release in 2022.

Pre-orders are available now & the first two singles Murking and Godolphin are available to listen now on streaming services. Featuring soaring soundscapes and beautifully constructed instrumentals, the band recall the lush pieces of artists like Tortoise, Grails, Do Make Say Think, as well as composer Hans Zimmer and soundtrack legends Goblin. Going back further, there are comparisons to early era Yes and King Crimson.

Having only just emerged on the Sydney live music scene, the project features a revolving lineup of live performers, anchored by a core of four members. clayhands join the immense Bird's Robe Australian roster alongside sleepmakeswaves, We Lost The Sea, Meniscus, Closure in Moscow, Toehider, Tangled Thoughts of Leaving, SEIMS, Dumbsaint, Solkyri & more.

The band comments: "In exciting news, we’re honoured to be signing up with The Bird’s Robe Collective, an integral cog of the progressive music scene in Sydney, and indeend, many other places. This marks an enthralling new chapter in the book of clayhands."

Bird’s Robe Records’ Director Mike Solo released the following statement: "I recently heard the debut album from this Sydney group and was blown away, it’s glorious. They also played an excellent support set for Solkyri recently, I got excited and invited them to join the family. This is a wonderfully talented young group and I’m super happy to be helping share their music with more people around the world."

Otto Wicks-Green, guitarist of label mates & fellow Sydney post-rock group sleepmakeswaves, had this to say about a preview copy of the album: "It's lovely. A very cinematic take on post rock. There are parts that felt to me like Hans Zimmer meets EITS with those sweeping harmonic strings sections, but with this cool mathy spice throughout keeping everything pulsing. Then these more abstract and funky jazz moments. very thoughtful arrangements and instrumentation keep it interesting.

There's a pleasant spaciousness to these tracks. Overall (they) have done a great job and this is a killer release. it kept me wanting to stay for the whole thing, which is no mean feat for an extended instrumental record. another feather in the Bird’s Robe cap for sure

KAVRILA "Mor":

A diary of loss. Back and forth between memories, presence, and the struggle within. A cathartic process. Introversive. Abrasive. Fragile. Not supposed to comfort you. Not supposed to give you answers.

For their sophomore album Kavrila decided to take a different approach to recording Mor compared to their previous album, and EPs. A two day live recording session with producer, and engineer Timo Höcke at his Wellenschmiede Studio in Hamburg, Germany. Apart from a few overdubs everything else was composed and recorded in the studio. During the creative process of Mor a decision was made to give the music the right amount of time needed, so it could resonate better to Alex‘s vocals, and his approach to the lyrics. The passing of his mother, and the process of coping became the main theme of the whole album. This wasn’t planned beforehand, but ended up being the result of the natural progression of the music, and the conversations within the band.

All lyrics were written by Alex except the last song Retribution which was written by Daniel (Bass). The band chose Retribution as the last song of the album because they felt the lyrics gave the album as a whole a sense of closure. The meaning behind Retribution is that time heals, one needs to be patient, and not give up hope, cause even in the darkest of times you can always find a speck of light.

Respect what you lost and embrace what will follow...
