SVIN "Introducing SVIN":

On the seventh album Introducing SVIN, the Danish avant garde rock-trio SVIN widens its musical scope once more by incorporating electronics and vocal collaborations with renowned singers Bisse and Marie Eline Hansen. The result is a dynamic, techno-mechanic sounding record, that aligns with the contemporary ever accelerating integration of the digital and analog domains of man and machine within human existence and experience.

The band has made their mark on the international music scene since debuting in 2011 with the album Heimat. After consolidating the current line-up, SVIN released their 5th album Virgin Cuts in 2018. The album features music that drags the listener into a sonic loophole between noise-infested rock, drony landscapes, new age minimalism and dusty afro-tripping, drawing on heavy inspirations from nature, folklore, ceremonial music and avant-garde.

SVIN has performed at festivals such as Roskilde Festival, Eurosonic and by:Larm and has during the recent years toured extensively all over Europe, Russia and the Balkans. The band is a part of the programme “The Young Artistic Elite” from 2019 - 2022 supported by The Danish Arts Foundation. In 2019, SVIN was commissioned to compose music for the contemporary ensemble, Århus Sinfonietta, which premiered at Aarhus Festuge, and in January 2022, the music from this commision was released on the album Elegi.

SVIN’s new album Introducing SVIN expands on the trio’s bricolage aesthetics by adding a higher degree of electronics to the studio production. This delivers a robotic, futuristic feel of man and machine interwoven in a simultaneously manually operated and techo-mechanic musical multiverse. The cyborg-ish jazz rock vibes circulate in an musical reality with the natural and digital domains continuously shifting role and meaning, a stance visually reoccurring in the glitchy album artwork shaped by Ana Vujovic.

Upon entering the studio, the new material was more unpolished than at prior sessions with more left to chance and the spur of the moment during the two recording sessions with producer Jens Benz (Iceage a.o.). New paths were taken and collabs emerged with renowned singer Bisse and his twisted chant on Bøn and ditto Marie Eline Hansen’s (Traening a.o.) calmly-anxious speak on album closer Dødsensangst. As ever, SVIN hits the sweet spot between improvisation and structure, keeping enough elastic to make the music breathe, break and creating head space for the listener within the strange, soothing intersectional sounds that makes up Introducing SVIN.

YOO DOO RIGHT "A Murmur, Boundless To The East":

Experimental rock trio Yoo Doo Right (Montréal, CA) wed noisy, melodic guitar parts, effect-heavy synthesizer soundscapes, deep bass grooves and patented percussive furies into a literal wall of sound. In their honest approach to experimentation, they engage with elements of krautrock, shoegaze, post-rock and psychedelia, crafting a unique sound that could be described as a “car crash in slow motion”.

After premiering its tracks for hometown fans inside the dome at Société des arts technologiques de Montréal in the Summer of 2020, post-everything outfit Yoo Doo Right knew there was but one way to record A Murmur, Boundless To The East: live off-the-floor at world-famous studio Hotel2Tango. To help achieve this vision, the musicians called upon acclaimed record producer, Radwan Ghazi Moumneh (Suuns, Ought, Fly Pan Am), who deftly printed forty-five minutes of gritty experimental rock.

Though dynamics and depth were always core elements in Yoo Doo Right’s music, A Murmur, Boundless To The East reaffirms the notion that the spectrum of sound is in fact infinite. Also thanks to the work of celebrated engineer Seth Manchester, tasked with mixing the opus at Machines With Magnets (Battles, Lightning Bolt, Lingua Ignota) in Pawtucket (RI), as well as that of Matthew Barnhart (FACS, Destroyer, METZ) at Chicago Mastering Services, fans of extremes in music are served with a long-player that fascinates and lingers.

The band comments: "A Murmur, Boundless To The East’s overarching theme is suppressed anger or gritted teeth. We went to Hotel2Tango to record with our friend Radwan Ghazi Moumneh, hoping to build on our sound, while being more cohesive, more patient. As was mainly the case on our previous album, we again recorded most of the tracks live off-the-floor. Another friend of ours, Jessica Moss, laid some violin on the album. The tracks then traveled all the way to Pawtucket, RI to be mixed by Seth Manchester at Machine With Magnets, before ending in Chicago for mastering."

Also featuring inspired contributions from innovative violin player, Jessica Moss (Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tralala Band, Black Ox Orkestar), to compliment percussion, bass, guitar, synthesizers and vocals, A Murmur, Boundless To The East is a must-have for fans of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, My Bloody Valentine, METZ, etc.

SOUNDS OF NEW SOMA "Musique Bizzare":

Musique Bizarre is already the eleventh album by the experimental sound duo Sounds Of New Soma (Alex Djelassi | Dirk Raupach).

The approach to the creation of the songs was completely different this time. A double LP was envisaged as the concept, with various musicians from Tonzonen Records abel bands. A collaboration where musicians / bands provide the duo with sound files to be recorded for this concept. The musicians were completely free to decide what would be made available to the duo in the end.

The duo then processed the resulting fragments in their Helmtown studio. Ideas for the sound files were developed and recorded. A process that took several months. Some of the songs came together very quickly, others were complex and difficult, but the duo finally succeeded in bringing all the submitted ideas into new song structures and giving the album a unity. This was not an easy undertaking, as the bands' specifications ranged from classic rock elements to avantgarde sound files to free jazz and oriental elements. But Musique Bizarre has been given a clear structure and is a self-contained, always exciting concept album.

A special sound cosmos from catchy songs to elusive free pieces. The electronic part of Sounds Of New Soma plays a big role, as well as the classical instrumentation of rock and jazz music.

The recordings were mixed in the local Helmtown Studio and mastered once again by Eroc (Grobschnitt).

The deliberately reduced cover artwork is complemented by the multi-layered colourful illustration on the inside, which perfectly fits the theme of the album. The artist Gerry Carnelly created the artwork for Musique Bizarre.

HIGH CASTLE TELEORKESTRA "The Egg That Never Opened":

After 2 long years of meticulous production, High Castle Teleorkestra's debut album, The Egg That Never Opened (Radio Free Albemuth part 1), is finally being released by Australia’s forward-thinking Art As Catharsis label in June 2022. It will be available in standard download formats as well as a gorgeous 180g 2x12" 45rpm double LP and 20 page-2CD digibook. Deluxe options include 40+ downloadable bonus tracks, a t-shirt, chord book and other exclusive content.

The album traces the narrative of the discarded novel Radio Free Albemuth by famous sci-fi author Phillip K. Dick, which will be increasingly explored in HCT's music videos.

HCT's music is not unlike what might be expected from a group with such a diverse collective musical résumé, yet is somehow fresh, vibrant, and dare we say mature in its eclectic cadence. The musical terrain traversed by this largely instrumental group includes long forgotten European waltzes with untimely bursts of "Vaudeville Grindcore," 70's Italian cinema-inspired songs, Romanian Folk Metal, 50's sci-fi-surf instrumentals, innovative use of odd meters, and non-standard tunings.

There are densely layered productions enriched by obsessive attention to detail, starkly unrelated genre superimposition, unclassifiable styles, ultra-refined chord progressions, sonic timbres that would've made Joe Meek proud, inscrutable metric modulations, and more. Despite the wide array of styles, the recordings are surprisingly cohesive. There is an odd mixture of hi-fi and lo-fi components that converge to make aesthetically pleasing recordings that sound as if they were produced on a 1970's 2-inch tape machine. Despite the convenient aid of modern machinery in their productions, HCT cuts no corners, and even runs their final mixes to JH110B 1⁄4 inch analog tape to round out their warm sound. High Castle Teleorkestra aims to blow minds, satisfy souls, and quench the musical thirst of those who have sorely missed any or all acts from the graveyard of defunct, semi-defunct, and/or active bands they've helped populate.

SOFT FFOG "s/t":

The first signing on Is it Jazz? Records, the new sub-label of Karisma Records, is the Norwegian instrumental quartet Soft Ffog. And what a perfect first signing for a prog rock label going into vast and scary jazz territory.

As the band says themselves: "Ever wondered what it would sound like if Jimi Hendrix joined Deep Purple pursuing to sound like Gentle Giant, and then failing miserably because of too much jazz consumption lately? Didn’t think so, but anyhow Soft Ffog ́s sound is unique, and draws parallels to the aforementioned acts in somewhat style, compositions and aesthetic, but is more rooted in jazz with their prolonged solos and improvisations."

Soft Ffog started as one-off gig commissioned by Kongsberg Jazzfestival in 2016. Despite the success of this event, the band did not get the momentum it needed to be a proper working band. This combined with the busy schedules for the musicians in other bands and projects, the band only played gigs every now and then. These gigs did help refining their sound, so bandleader Tom Hasslan decided in 2020 that the time was right to record their first album with all Hasslan compositions.

The band consists of band leader Tom Hasslan (Krokofant) on guitars, Axel Skalstad (Krokofant) on drums, Trond Frønes (Red Kite, Grand General) on bass and Vegard Lien Bjerkan (WIZRD) on keyboards. The album was recorded at Studio Paradiso with Christian Engfelt as engineer and producer.

The combined members of Soft Ffog have probably played with everyone in the Norwegian jazz scene, but here they do their own thing and they’re combining the sounds from King Crimson with Terje Rypdal, Deep Purple with Pat Metheny, and it sounds awesome!

Beware of blistering guitar solos, gnarly bass, crazy drums and supersonic keyboard playing!

These guys have been attending Bird’s Robe shows for years and I’ve come to know them as polite, incredibly talented and good natured people. Just the kind of people I like!

They have such a unique and gifted sound and I’ve been a big fan of theirs for a long time. Before they release their next album of brand new music, I really wanted to share Silent Bodies with more people around the world. Their music deserves to be heard and appreciated and I hope we can brighten people’s days a bit with their exciting mathy-experimental-alternative-rock hybrid.

At any rate, here we are, with a fantastic new album to share with people from this hardworking and unique Australian post-rock group.

NOORVIK "Hamartia":

After having devoted themselves thematically to colder spaces on their first two releases, Noorvik and their new lineup dive into the fiery realm of Greek Mythology on Hamartia. The story of Tantalus is the focus of an epic musical journey: almost seventy minutes of progressive instrumental music in which a king realizes the consequences of his arrogant actions and in the end falls from his throne to a special level of the underworld, Tartarus.

Hamartia metaphorically tells of how man's greed and arrogance sow the seeds of his own downfall. Narcissism and egotism outshine the pristine beauty of the world and the innocence of its inhabitants. Tantalus is emblematic of our modern society in that while we live in technological splendor, we will eventually reap the inevitable consequence of our actions.

But Noorvik also reflects the desperation and hope of a generation on Hamartia, wanting change and not tolerating the current situation. It becomes clear that the ancient myth of Tantalus is still relevant today.

Noorvik present eight heavy instrumental tracks that provoke tension but also exude hope.

CARPET WAVES "Inner Weapons":

On their new EP Inner Weapons, Carpet Waves describe the feeling of being torn apart, conflicts with the outside world and the world of oneself, as well as the will to shout everything out at some point in order to finally find a place in time and space: "All Your Numbers Are Chromatic”. However, the first song Biography does not progress in small steps: pocket drums and post-punk guitar figures herald the five-song EP, before singer Benny sings about the frustration with the outside world and fellow human beings with stoic vocals. The break follows in the chorus and stoicism gives way to dissonance and outburst: The others, all those who seem so far ahead of us, they are actually not. As soon as the last rage has vanished, the dreamy guitars take us into the small chamber of the inner worlds: in the Narrow Dream Factory, the sounds whirr around the heads of the listeners, lulling them to sleep, only to be torn out of the maelstrom again at the end and smashed out with full force - because that’s the way it has to be to survive. But even when the outside world calls, the good and bad dreams remain. Return, recursion: what happened? What was intoxication and what was dream, who is what and what is the essence? Shadows asks these questions in polished Robert Smith meets Chameleons in 90s Sonic Youth fashion. Instrumental chaos and distorted completion are followed by contemplation: Aura is the first song the band wrote in the rehearsal room after a 6-month lockdown break - according to memory in less than an hour, the lyrics followed the next day.

Sonic Youth is replaced by Slowdive and Ride, pads spread out, filling our dreams: “If dreams were my weapon tonight”. At the end of the five songs, the gloomy 80s take over again, the coldness spreading over expansive instrumentals. The emptiness, the void wilderness, it is broken by staccato drums and guitars, discontinuity and pain are sung about, but also played upon. Until the repetition, the always the same, takes hold and the instruments blur in the head, drifting on and on, rearing up and in the end, as if there were no other option left, withdrawing, but never disappearing completely.
