JACK ELLISTER "Lichtpyramide"

Having been featured prominently in TimeMazine, Eclipsed and Shindig! and voted favourite solo artist by the Fruits de Mer records extended family, Jack Ellister is one of those rarefied sore thumbs sitting on the outer edges of the great psychedelic cosmos crafting wired and weird kaleidoscopic classics, with the occasional airplay on BBC radio by Stuart Maconie or Nick Luscombe.

His latest project Lichtpyramide focuses on kosmische/ kraut and is 100% instant composing (okay 98%, thereís two passages read from books), making heavy use of a 4 track loop station paired with various synthesizers, guitars, analogue outboard gear and mixer and an Otari MX5050iii eight track tape recorder. The outcome is a blend of soundscapes, short improvised pieces, musical sketches and spoken word.

The first side of this LP was released on CD-R, as a gig exclusive last November at the Fruits De Mer & Megadodo labelnight in Bristol. The second side is a selection of similar, more recent recordings, some of which were published on his Bandcamp page.

If you know his previous catalog, Lichtpyramide might surprise you (or not, as there were such bits already on his Telegraph Hill album, released on the Spanish You Are The Cosmos! Label in 2018), and hopefully pleasantly so, as Jack Ellister steps away even more from what are traditionally termed the songwriting and influences of his first couple of albums, and delves instead into experiment and improvisation.

The titles and text on Lichtpyramide are predominantly German, but thereís also Polish and English ones. This is to underline his striving for the original ambitions of the krautrock originators: to create a cosmic music, hopefully something spiritually enhancing that is free from borders or genre pre- conceptions ( at least as far as reasonable without losing it completely ). On Lichtpyramide the tracks are transitioning from one to the next without interruption, to create more the feel of a continuous journey through various areas of a constantly changing landscape.

"In order to understand what a mantra is, it is necessary to adopt the perspective that considers all things in function of sound and movement. Everything in the universe is a vibration; this vibration has the living sense of speaking, of
expressing the invisible world. It is movement as sounding word and revealing Logos.

sleepmakeswaves "These Are Not Your Dreams":

Australian instrumental post-rockers sleepmakeswaves have announced new music for 2020, three years since their 2017 release Made of Breath Only.

The new record, These Are Not Your Dreams will be released on 17 July 2020.

Rather than following a conventional release pattern, new songs will be released as a series of 3 EPs over the next few months, with No Safe Place out now, Out of Hours released on June 5 and Not an Exit released July
3. The first single Cascades debuted on triple jís Home & Hosed in January, with a second track The Endings That We Write premiering on triple jís The Racket in February.

sleepmakeswaves comments "These Are Not Your Dreams refers to how modern life is rubbish and the internet is invading our brains. Itís control through disorientation and the manipulation of Ďyour dreams.í

Every song from this series has been an experiment in how far we can push ourselves creatively and sonically... because what else is there?

There's so much going on all the time, why do people need more?

We've set ourselves the challenge of answering that question every day we've worked on our material. And we wanted to work harder than ever to justify it in an age of limitless novelty.

We're producing all of these as a one-time limited edition release & we're happy to be using recycled materials to produce these physical products wherever possible, as well as offsetting the carbon footprint for the other merch packages. Itís been a long time coming. If you're still here, we hope you understand how grateful we are to have your support after all these years. We're proud and excited to share this with you, and we want to thank our dear friend and manager Mike for sticking with us to see this through. That's it from us
."

The continuation of sleepmakeswaves is an ongoing a celebration of all that. A way to say thank you for everything, with a quick glance backwards, before continuing on with many more new things to come.

Expect plenty of surprises, new music and one heck of a live post-rock show from this hard-working still-young band!

LA PHAZE "Pungle Roads":

La Phaze are a legendary French electro-rock group whose style draws from drumíníbass and punk rock in particular.

Damny Baluteau (vocals, keyboards, bass) and Arnaud Fournier
(guitar) founded the group in 1999 with the idea of synthesizing drumíníbass and guitar-driven rock into an electro-rock style that could be performed live. Following the addition of DJ Mouf on turntables, La Phaze made their commercial recording debut in 2000 with Cushy Time, a six-track EP released on the Jarring Effects label. A couple years later the group recorded their debut full-length album titled Pungle Roads (2002) for the label The Modern Things. Pungle Roads was released in France in 2002, and would be his first international record of La Phaze.

Pungle Roads is now re-released on French indie labels Atypeek Music and Bruillance as a special limited edition vinyl.

2003 marked the release of a remix album titled Punglistic Mixture on the Small Axe label. In 2004 Aurťlien Walter (aka DJ Nevrax) replaced DJ Mouf on turntables, and the group proceeded to release their second full-length album, Fin de Cycle (2005), on Because Music, one of the premier French independent labels. Former Superbus group member Guillaume Roussť (aka Rouzman; drums) then replaced Walter for the third La Phaze album, Miracle (2008), which, like its predecessor, was released on Because Music and hit the French albums charts. Their fourth album Psalms And Revolutions was released in 2011, after a long 2 years tour the band decided to split up. Years later, in 2018, Damny and Arnaud along with newcomer Speaker Louis joined forces and the new La Phaze was born again! After a summer tour, they recorded the new album Visible(s) that will be released in October 2020 on french label At(h)ome. - Jason Birchmeier, Rovi

THE OPIUM CARTEL "Valor":

The Opium Cartel is songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Jacob Holm-Lupoís vehicle for songs that exist somewhere between sophisti-pop, art-rock and synth pop. Holm-Lupo is otherwise known for his progressive rock band White Willow and more recently his instrumental giallo-rock project Telepath.

The Opium Cartelís 3rd album,Valor, is a record about naÔve but brave dreams. These are songs about the hubris and optimism of childhood and youth. That period of life where everything seems sure to happen just the way you imagine: You will fall in love with the most beautiful girl in the world and she will love you back. You will become a pilot or an astronaut or defy gravity in some other way. You will explode into a world of color and wonder. You will never be disappointed or let down. You will take every risk without fear of failure.

These are also songs about that bittersweet moment when you start to realize that things may be a little different than you imagined. Not all things, but some.

Musically the album takes inspiration from a variety of predominantly 1980s sources, from The Blue Nile and Shriekback, via late Roxy Music to the prog-pop of 80s Alan Parsons Project and Camel. The period feel is amplified by Holm-Lupoís use of exclusively hardware synthesizers iconic to the era, like the Oberheim Matrix-6 and Yamaha DX7.

These people helped realize the songs: Silje Huleboer, a vocalist known from the audiophile acoustic duo Ole & Silje Huleboer. While her main inspiration is Mariah Carey, her tastes are way more eclectic, and she is known for her collaborations with noise musician Sten Ove Toft as well as pop/hiphop comet Emile the Duke.
Her collaborator in Ole & Silje Huleboer, Ole ōvstedal, also contributes on the album, with bass and guitar. He is best known from his psychedelic hard rock band Spirits of the Dead, as well as countless collaborations on the Oslo scene.
Lead guitar on the instrumental tunes comes courtesy of Norwegian guitar hero BjÝrn Riis, of Airbag fame.
Drums are provided by Lars Fredrik FrÝislie, better known as keyboardist in prog kings Wobbler and Holm-Lupoís own band White Willow. That he is also a formidable drummer is a well-known fact to anyone who has heard his avant-metal band In Lingua Mortua.
Jacob Holm-Lupoís daughter, Ina A, provides lead vocals on the synth-heavy Nightwings Ė the recording debut for the 13 year old singer and musician.
Israeli singer Leah Marcu, from prog metallers Tillian, sings lead on The Curfew Bell, where Russian violinist/viola player Maria Grigoryeva has arranged and performed the strings.
Russian-Israeli saxophonist Ilia Skibinsky, whose credits are a whoís who of jazz including everyone from Randy Brecker to Larry Graham, plays saxophone on In the Streets.
The CD comes with a bonus track, a cover of Rattís 1988 song Whatís It Gonna Be, where Alexander Stenerud of Zuma, who also sang on the previous The Opium Cartel album, provides vocals.

The cover photograph was taken by legendary rock photographer Glen Wexler, who has made covers for Van Halen, Rush and countless others. The photoshoot, which took place in Wexlerís studio in Los Angeles, was assisted by members of Cirque du Soleil.

AIRBAG "A Day At The Beach":

Itís been 4 years, but finally the fifth album from Airbag will be released on June 19th on Karisma Records, and it has definitely been worth the wait.

A Day At The Beach features six new songs recorded during autumn and winter of 2019- 20. Inspired by the resurgence of 1980s electronica, new wave and movie scores, Airbag has created a powerful sound combining ethereal soundscapes with their signature guitar driven progressive rock.

The result is a stunning selection of songs revealing a mature band looking forward, with an impressive legacy.

Airbag explains: "The album is the result of a strong collaboration between all three of us. Having lost two original members since our last album, we were forced to rethink how we write and create new music, but it also allowed us to venture into something new that turned out to be very inspiring."

Lyrically, A Day At The Beach is very much a story of us and them, told by a husband, father and brother leaving his family behind into an unknown future. Itís the contrast between the desperate individual struggling to survive and people in power observing at a safe distance.

For the production of A Day At The Beach, Airbag has once again teamed up with long-time collaborator and engineer Vegard Sleipnes, and it was mastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo. The album is produced by Asle Tostrup and BjÝrn Riis, and, as always, the cover is designed by vocalist Tostrup. The album, which is their first as a trio, also features talented guest musicians including Kristian Hultgren (Wobbler).

ARABS IN ASPIC "Madness and Magic":

Hailing from Trondheim in Norway, Arabs In Aspic has been mid-Norwayís flagship of 70s inspired progressive rock and proto-hardrock for the past 15 years. Theyíve been described as a sweet mixture of loud, heavy guitars and drums, 12 string acoustics, funky bass and percussion, screaming Hammond organs, soft Rhodes, Mellotrons and 70s Synths, topped with plentiful vocal harmonies - and this is also what they give us on their seventh album.

Madness Apnd Magic builds on where they left on Syndenes Magi, showcasing the acoustic side of the band more without losing any of their heaviness. This is evident in the fact that Madness And Magic is their first album written and recorded with two unique drummers.

About the lyrical themes, the band says: "The lyrics of Madness And Magic " reflect on how easily both children and adults are affected in the digital age, but also how helpless we are when we have to put our lives in the hands of specialists. Many ideas came up after a brief meeting with Doctor Death. The message of Madness And Magic is up to the listener to decide. Because you are capable of thinking for yourself, right?"

The new album from Arabs In Aspic takes the listener for a journey through Madness And Magic, both musically and lyrically, and what an awesome journey it is!

SHAMAN ELEPHANT "Wide Awake But Still Asleep":

When Shaman Elephant's debut album Crystals hit the streets in late 2016, Prog fans sat up and took notice of a band that was able to demonstrate an uncanny skill in the art of blending 60ís and 70ís psychedelia with progressive rock, and who sounded impressive not just in the studio, but also on stage - as fans who witnessed their shows in Norway and Europe are able to attest. And now, after honing those skills even further, Shaman Elephant are back with Wide Awake But Still Asleep, an album that demonstrates just how much the band has matured as songwriters and musicians, whilst not losing any of that considerable Shaman Elephant charm.

As the band says themselves: "With this album we feel like we have found out who we want to be as a band. Whilst the first album was going in all directions, this album feels more focused and mature. ďWide Awake But Still AsleepĒ is our attempt at making the melodies move like butterflies while the grooves sting like killer bees."

With yet another killer production from Iver SandÝy (drummer of Enslaved) at Solslottet Studio, with Wide Awake But Still Asleep Shaman Elephant has produced one hell of a follow up album.
